Success Isn’t About Working More. It’s About Living Better.
By Karan Garg
One question I am often asked by entrepreneurs, professionals, and even close friends is:
“How do you manage so many responsibilities without looking constantly stressed?”
The truth is…
I don’t believe success comes from working 16 or 18 hours a day.
I believe success comes from managing your energy, your priorities, and your time with intention.
Over the last 22+ years of building businesses, working with more than 2,000 organizations, leading teams, travelling, networking with entrepreneurs, learning new technologies, and balancing family life, I’ve realized something that has completely changed the way I live.
Life isn’t meant to be dominated by work.
It is meant to be balanced.
That is why I try to follow a simple philosophy that I call the 8+8+8 Principle.
It isn’t a rigid timetable.
It isn’t a rulebook.
It is simply a reminder that every important area of life deserves our attention.
The First 8 Hours: Create Value Through Meaningful Work
Work gives us purpose.
It allows us to solve problems.
Serve customers.
Build teams.
Create opportunities.
Support families.
Contribute to society.
Whether you’re an entrepreneur, professional, consultant, doctor, teacher, engineer, or student, your work deserves your complete attention while you’re doing it.
When I work, I try to work with complete focus.
No unnecessary distractions.
No endless social media scrolling.
No multitasking for the sake of looking busy.
Just meaningful, productive work.
In today’s AI-powered world, working longer is no longer the competitive advantage.
Working smarter is.
Technology, automation, and Artificial Intelligence should help us create more value in less time—not trap us into working every waking hour.
The Second 8 Hours: Invest in Your Life
Many people build successful businesses.
Far fewer build successful lives.
This second part of the day belongs to everything that makes life worth living.
Your family.
Your spouse.
Your children.
Your parents.
Your friends.
Your health.
Your hobbies.
Your reading.
Your spirituality.
Your fitness.
Your networking.
Your learning.
Your community.
As entrepreneurs, we often postpone happiness.
“We’ll travel after the business grows.”
“We’ll spend time with family next year.”
“We’ll take care of our health later.”
Unfortunately…
Life doesn’t wait.
The greatest investment isn’t always financial.
Sometimes it’s simply being fully present with the people who matter.
Relationships Are a Long-Term Investment
Throughout my journey, I have discovered that opportunities rarely come from strangers.
They come from relationships.
Business grows through trust.
Leadership grows through influence.
Life grows through meaningful human connections.
Spend time building relationships before you need them.
Meet people.
Help people.
Introduce people to one another.
Attend networking events.
Call old friends.
Celebrate other people’s successes.
A strong network becomes one of life’s greatest assets.
Never Stop Learning
One of the biggest changes in recent years has been the speed at which the world evolves.
Artificial Intelligence.
Automation.
Digital marketing.
Business models.
Leadership styles.
Customer expectations.
Everything changes faster than ever before.
Learning can no longer be occasional.
It must become a lifestyle.
I try to dedicate time every day to reading, observing, learning, experimenting, and reflecting.
The entrepreneurs who remain curious will always stay relevant.
The Final 8 Hours: Rest Is Not Laziness
Modern society often glorifies exhaustion.
People proudly announce they slept only four hours.
They celebrate burnout as if it were a badge of honour.
I respectfully disagree.
Sleep is one of the highest-return investments we can make.
When we sleep well:
- We think more clearly.
- We make better decisions.
- We solve problems faster.
- We communicate better.
- We become more patient.
- We stay healthier.
- We lead more effectively.
A tired entrepreneur rarely makes great strategic decisions.
Balance Doesn’t Mean Equal Time Every Day
One misconception about the 8+8+8 philosophy is that every single day must be perfectly divided.
Real life doesn’t work that way.
There are product launches.
Client deadlines.
Business travel.
Family functions.
Emergencies.
Celebrations.
Unexpected opportunities.
Some days work will demand more.
Some days family deserves more.
Some days your health needs your attention.
The objective isn’t perfection.
The objective is awareness.
Whenever one area of life dominates for too long, consciously restore balance.
Think of the 8+8+8 principle as a compass—not a stopwatch.
Success Without Health Isn’t Success
I’ve met many successful entrepreneurs.
Some built remarkable companies.
Yet many quietly admitted they had neglected their health, relationships, or peace of mind along the way.
Success becomes incomplete if it costs you everything else.
True wealth includes:
- Physical health
- Mental peace
- Meaningful relationships
- Financial stability
- Personal growth
- Purposeful work
- Time freedom
The goal isn’t simply to build a successful business.
The goal is to build a successful life.
My Personal Take
If there is one lesson my entrepreneurial journey has taught me, it is this:
Time is the only resource that can never be replenished.
Money can be earned again.
Businesses can be rebuilt.
Skills can be learned.
But today’s 24 hours will never return.
That realization changes how we choose to spend every hour.
The 8+8+8 philosophy has never been about mathematics.
It has always been about mindfulness.
Work wholeheartedly.
Love wholeheartedly.
Rest wholeheartedly.
When you give your full attention to the moment you’re in, every area of life becomes stronger.
As entrepreneurs and professionals, we often spend years learning how to build successful businesses.
Perhaps we should spend equal effort learning how to build meaningful lives.
Because in the end, success isn’t measured only by the size of your business.
It is measured by the quality of your relationships, the impact you create, the peace you experience, and the legacy you leave behind.
And that, in my opinion, is the true meaning of a balanced life.
